A time period that ranges from the 1800’s to 1850’s is known as a tremendous changing time for our young country of America. These changes included the Social Reform Era, Manifest Destiny, Industrialization, and Urbanization. Changes like these took huge effect on American History. Without knowing and understanding these aspects it is very difficult to know how the development of America worked. It is important to realize that events like these let America unravel into a valuable long lasting country.
The 1920s, also known as the “Roaring Twenties”, was an exhilarating time full of significant social, economic, and political change. For most Americans, it was full of the prosperity and peace that followed World War I. Middle-class life was full of leisure and class. For others, this time period was filled with hardships and challenges. Many immigrants and African-Americans faced discrimination and segregation from the rest of the United States. One notable, positive aspect of the 1920s was its booming economy.

The women would wear modest clothing, every daily task was done by hand, social standards were set no matter your race, and drinking became a serious problem despite your age or gender. The Progressive Era from the 1890s to 1920s was a period that experienced extensive social activism and political reforms across the United States. This movement was spurred by the heightened level of corruption and injustice of large corporations and in government at that time. The movement primarily comprised of “liberals who wanted to reform and regulate their capitalist society and not destroy it. " There were several pushes to make the political process more open and transparent. One of which was the adaptation of the direct primary elections and to grant the Presidents more powers to regulate new laws.
During the 1800 many individuals shaped what we call today the American society and culture. Many settlers’ didn’t know how impactful this would affect in today’s society. Some of the greatest example that changed America was Roger Williams, Alexander Hamilton, Nathanael Greene, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Rolfe, William Penn, Benjamin Franklin, and least but not last Thomas Paine. They became well recognized during the 1800 due to their major judgments such as religious issues, politically, economically, and founding new lands in America. In addition, they also left a legacy for many founded colonies in the United States.
The United States experienced political, geographic, economic, and, social changes during first half of the 1800s. Many people received new opportunities that helped open doors for them to begin their new, successful lives. Women received equality under the law for both men, and women causing political change. Also settlers were inspired to move to western land to expand their lands and settle in these new territories causing geographic change. And also the slaves were given some equality including the abolition of slavery causing social change.
The 1920s were the first years of the new, modern America, with a growing consumer society and new ideas and rules. America saw many changes throughout this decade, including but not limited to social, economic and political changes. Throughout this time, new values were made with the growth of new forms of entertainment and education. After the Progressive Era, the ideas of political figures changed with a new focus on conservative politics and less labor issues. With the new ability for people to buy other products than basic needs, their money went to new inventions, causing new industries to grow.
Along with changes within society, education experienced great changes as well. When World War I started, there was only about one million kids attending a high school. However, this number soared to over four million by 1926. With industry booming and the economy prospering, there was a need for higher skilled laborers. This is exactly what high schools became in the 1920’s, as they offered a big range of various courses for students who were interested in industrial jobs.

The major cultural and societal changes in America, in the 1920s, that paved the way for the Great Depression were the Prohibition (of alcohol) Act, improved transportation, and the changing role of women. By creating the Prohibition (of alcohol) Act, the leaders thought that it would lower the crime rate, but instead, it actively demonstrated an increase in the crime rate. Although the transportation system was significantly improved, it still had some flaws. Likewise, women and men's wage gaps decreased drastically, but they are still not equal to this day.
