Argumentative essay on “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe. (Introduction) “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe is a poem that is very dark. The poem is about a man whose wife recently died so now he is lonely. Some people would say that the main character is insane, but at the same time he is really sad about his wife’s passing. I say he is a little insane because at one point in the story he lets a raven in his house and starts to ask it questions.
Loss, in its various manifestations, impacts the mind significantly. Take for instance, by the time Edgar Allen Poe was 35, both his adoptive and biological mothers had passed away. Alongside, his spouse was gravely unwell. This triad impacted his personal writing greatly, often expressing his personal experiences using literary devices to show raw emotion and sorrow. Notably, his frightening work called “The Raven” shows his talent to transfer personal experiences into remarkable poems.

To begin this essay, I will be discussing Edgar Allan Poe and how he uses different ways to create an eerie tone. He likes to use repetition and diction in order to generate a dark tone and theme. Dark and mysterious is what he is known for. His some of poems aren’t happy, which is probably because some talk about death and others have a creepy thought behind them.
The Raven was not only a story about Poe's early childhood but was also how poetry had affected his life. Poe wrote The Raven not just to start writing but to show how his life originally started out hard and then he never gave up and now he has become a successful poet. Edgar's parents had died when he was at a early age and he had been adopted by a really nice adoptive mom but his adoptive dad was really mean and was a drunk. His adoptive parents were not any better then the way his real parents were.
In this age where we swipe away, new music stars are born every minute and fame is something that could last for a mere week, one-hit wonders have become common and part of daily life. In 1845, Poe had some sort of one-hit wonder with The Raven. As the Poe Museum site (2015) tells his story, Poe finally gained a lot of attention with his publication of The Raven, after having lived a life of poverty where at one point he even had to burn down is furniture for some warmth. Yet his venture failed, the health of his wife was deteriorating and as with every famous person there were rumours right around the corner. He left New York in 1846 and in the next three year his wife died, his amorous escapades were failures and soon death came knocking.
The narrator asks the raven a series of distressing questions even when he knows that the response is already predetermined. The narrator of the poem illustrates how humans search for meaning even when their existence seems meaningless (Poe, Quinn, O’Neill, and Kauffer 21). The person knows that the speech by the raven has no meaning, but he still continues to ask questions that may give significance to the predetermined responses by the raven. Throughout literature, an author's works always reflects their mood and character. Edgar Allen Poe is an American writer who's poem and short stories reflected on his ominous mood. In the poem, "The Raven," by Edgar Allen Poe is about a raven that flies into a lonely and sad man's house, he is alone and weak, he is weary of trying to distract himself from his sorrow. It expresses Poe's sense of melancholy and gloominess. The speaker's tone changes throughout the poem dramatically changes as he realizes the true meaning of meeting with the Raven.

Emphasizing the "O" sound in words such as "Lenore" and "nevermore" underlines the lonely sound of the poem and establishes the overall atmosphere, and the repetition of "nevermore" gives a circular sense to the poem and contributes to what Poe called the unity of effect, where each word and line adds to the larger meaning of the poem. Like a number of Poe's poems, “The Raven” concerns an agonized protagonist's memories of a deceased woman. Edgar Allan Poe is an influential writer who is well known mainly for his dark and mysterious obscure short stories and poems. Throughout this essay I will analysing how poe uses a series of literary terms such as diction and anaphora in order to convey a bleak, eerie mood and tone. Poe uses these terms in order to contribute to his writing in a positive way, creating vivid images and a cheerless mood. In Poe’s poem, “The Raven”, he uses words such as lonely, stillness, ominous and fiery to add to the building up apprehension within the poem. In addition, he also uses repetition to create fluent yet unruffled, tragic feel for the reader.
