Common Themes In Brandon Sanderson's Steelheart

Brandon Sanderson, author of Steelheart, is writer and journalist who had written several fiction novels. Brandon is the author of three-part series, the first of which is Steelheart. Steelheart takes place in a dystopian world where people are ruled by individuals called Epics, whom have destructive ability. This book also takes place somewhere in present day, with all of modern technology. In David’s early years life was relatively easy until one day individuals of society(Epics) began to develop abilities that provided them advantages over ordinary men. With these abilities, it also came with corruption. The minds of these people became corrupt and they acted in ways that are evil and rash. A very common theme is not give up. This can be shown many times throughout book. For example, “I knew this. I’d made a habit… of studying the Reckoners”(24). David had spent most of his life studying Epics, and that even included a rebel group called the Reckoners, who aimed to eliminate Epics. For years David spent studying their attacks and guessing where they’d hit next. Finally after much planning and patience he managed to find them and make his move. In another scene, David tries another strategy to continue a plan, “You’re going to improvise, aren’t you?”(Sanderson 198). Here the Reckoners devised a plan to blow up a power station to cut the power to many outlets. The plan failed with certain factors not going according to plan. However, David didn’t want to back down, so he decided to take a different course of action. Having done this lead to the mission eventually being completed. Towards the end of the novel, another instance occurs where David doesn’t give up, “I spotted Steelheart, who was turned away from me, distracted by Prof. I ran for all I was worth…”(370). Here the Reckoners tried to escape from the final battle against Steelheart, but David couldn't simply leave. Instead, David tried one tactic that he believed could stop Steelheart. With this sheer determination to not give up, this resulted in the Reckoners stopping Steelheart. I personally have had
