There can be many themes throughout every story, especially in this book. An example of a theme may be, when facing a tough situation find a way out of it by standing up to the problem or figure out a way around the problem without resorting to violence. While this is a theme of the story this is also a life lesson everyone can follow. Like when Stewart is stuck in the locker room because of a jock named jared who won't let him out. “UN: Attempt to diffuse a situation by establishing a bond. So I started laughing, too.”(Nielsen46) This shows the theme that was mentioned earlier. Stewart was stuck in the locker room by Jared and found a way around it without having to resolve to violence or making a big fool of himself. This also leads into the next example Susin Nielsen provides. “It was larry who gave me the idea. I started thinking, why not? Why couldn’t we have protection squads?” “No reason why we should just do it for stewart. We could do it for other kids to.” (Nielsen238) This is a great example of the theme, Jared was not just picking on Stewart but a bunch of other kids at his school. So his step-sister Ashley and Stewart's friends created a protection squad to protect kids from jared or also known as the problem of the story. Or to put it in other words they resolved the problem without resorting to violence, they figured out a way to stop Jared from picking on other kids, and enjoy there day at school. The author does a excellent job with developing the story to get the reader thinking about what the theme of the story could be. Finally, this connects to the real world, many kids result in violence to solve a problem instead of finding a way around the problem, it;s easier that people might think it
