Throughout the school year, sophomore students have read many different pieces of literature that present different themes and ideas about society. Some are plays, others are novels; some are fictional, others are based on history. These books and plays have many different classifications, such as bildungsroman, dystopia, satire, and confessional to name a few. However, no matter what the piece was about, who the author was, or when it was written, themes prevalent in the novels and plays relate to themes ubiquitous in present popular culture.. Antigone, Julius Caesar, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Doll’s House, Macbeth, Fahrenheit 451, A Separate Peace, and Catcher in the Rye all present meanings and ideas similar to those in recently created songs. In the song “Grenade,” sacrifice is a major theme since Bruno sings he would do life risking actions for the person. I'd catch a grenade for ya Throw my hand on a blade for ya I'd jump in front of a train for ya You know I'd do anything for ya (Mars 9-12) In Antigone, Eteocles and Polyneices, the brothers of Antigone, have killed each other in a battle over the throne. However, Eteocles has been given a proper burial while Creon, the new king, has deemed Polyneices a traitor and therefore issues an edict forbidding anyone of burying him. Despite the punishment of death, Antigone buries Polyneices and is caught. Analogous to Bruno doing anything for the person in the song, Antigone risks her own life for her dead brother.
