Antigone was right in her decision in disobeying Creon and his decree to not bury Polyneices. Antigone was right in her decision in burying polyneices because she was following what she thought was right. She decided to follow what her religion told her to do even if it would cause her death: ” But I will bury him; and if I must die”(Prologue,55). She was not afraid about dying because she knew that
In the story of Antigone, Eteocles and Polyneices are both fighting to be the king of Thebes. They both die in the fight but Eteocles is buried while Polyneices is left to the vultures. Antigone is both Polyneices and Eteocles’ sister, With both brothers dead the throne was given to their uncle Creon, who believes Polyneices is a traitor and should not have a burial. Antigone strongly disagrees with Creon, thus sneaking out and giving him a proper burial. This action was considered punishable by death.
In the beginning of the play, Creon states that Eteocles “shall be buried in his grave'' due to him perishing in a noble manner. Creon then proclaims that Polyneices shall not receive a burial and prohibits anyone from honoring him by giving him a grave or mourning him. The reason as to why Creon prohibits the burial of Polyneices is due to the fact that he was “a returned exile” that “sought to burn with fire from top to bottom his native city, and the gods of his own people” (Sophicles 2010-2011). This explanation given by Creon provides the reader with a reason as to why Polyneices is not deserving of being honored with a burial. Creon being the current king of Thebes signifies that his orders are meant to be perceived as the law.
The tragic play “Antigone” written by Sophocles, follows after the war between Thebes and Argos. In the war, the two sons of Oedipus, Eteokles and Polynices fought for the throne; however, as a result, both sons die. Due to the brotherly feud, Eteokles and Polynices uncle, Creon becomes the king of Thebes. The new king Creon then passes on a law to not bury Polyneices the exile who rebelled against Thebes, but honor Eteokles who defended the country. He then stated, if the body were to be buried by someone, the burier must be executed.
In Antigone’s defense, she was only following the laws that were put in place by the god and goddesses. These laws are the highest of authority than any law set by a mortal. One of these laws set by the gods and goddesses was that everyone’s body, no matter who was to be buried. In contrast to the gods, Creon has set a law stating that nobody can bury the body of Polynices because he was titled as a traitor. Therefore, the law set by Creon is overruled by the gods’ law and Antigone did nothing wrong by burring Polynices even if Creon said he’s a traitor.
Who: Antigone What: Creon made an edict that Polynieces is not allowed to have proper burial rites but Antigone wants to defy him and bury his brother’s corpse Why: She must face this problem because she thinks that Polynieces deserves to be buried so that his soul may rest. Against all prohibitions and without any just cause, she will bury her brother to the point of her own death. Solution Attempted:
In Sophocles’ play Antigone, Antigone’s words, actions, and ideas contracted with Creon’s character. After, Eteocles and Polyneices killed each other in a battle of which one shall be declared king of Thebes. Creon declared that Polyneices should not be given the proper burial rights because, he was a disgrace for attacking his brother. Antigone loved her brothers that so she knew both brothers should have the same burial right for being part of the family . Yet Antigone knows, Creon wants to keep Polyneices from being buried.
Antigone's character displays the trait of being honorable through her quest to give her brother Polyneices a proper burial. She would rather "die an honorable death" instead of one with worst consequences (Sophocles). Antigone sees that there is no better way to die that a death with honor and faithfulness to her kin. Knowing the consequence of breaking Creon's law was death, she knew that if she were ever caught, she would "nobly die" (Mckay, line 5). Oedipus's stubborn daughter is not afraid to die, for she knows her death will not be for nothing.
Polyneices died in battle attacking creon 's city, therefore creon states that he will not be buried and anyone that tries to bury him shall be put to death. Antigone ignores creon and tries to get help from her sister. Morality; “principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior” Is the correlation
Kreon ordered that Eteokles would be given a proper burial, however, Polyneices was to be left outside as food to the wildlife (Sophocles, 22). We then start the play with Antigone confessing to her sister that she is going to disobey the law and bury Polyneices
Antigone believed that both men deserved a proper burial according to her beliefs in the god, Zeus. After the king, Creon, declared that Polyneices could not have a proper burial, and if anyone did, then they would be sentenced to death for their actions of defiance.
In the play Antigone, written by Sophocles, burial customs of the ancient Greeks play an extensive role. The women of the family perform the burial rites, and believed that if their distinct methods were not followed, the soul is destined to suffer between worlds until the correct rites were performed. Antigone, the sister of Polynices and Eteocles, is aware of this and is not going to stand by and let her brother, Polynices, linger between worlds in pain, after being killed by Eteocles. With her ambition and determination she does the deed, and of doing so she follows the god's laws, but breaks Creon’s laws in the midst of it. Creon is also aware of the burial rites but still decides, through his stubbornness, that Polynices shall not be performed these rites, because of his actions against Thebes.
As Antigone said when Creon asked her if she has heard of his edict, “It was public. Could I help hearing it?” (708). This tells us that Antigone knew that what she was doing was illegal and yet she still chose to bury Polyneices no matter the consequences for her. On the other hand, you could say that even though Antigone knew what she was doing was wrong, she did it because she knew that it was the right thing to do.
Antigone wants her brother to receive proper burial rites in the play “Antigone”, written by Sophocles. In the lead up to the play, two brothers fight till death in order to receive the beloved power over Thebes. In the dual between the two brothers, Polyneices met fatality while bringing mischief upon the city of Thebes. Consequently, the King, Creon, declared that Polyneices’s proper burial rites should be revoked. Antigone was driven by tradition and her family values to bury her deceased brother; thus forthe, she was readily willing to suffer her punishment.
In the play, Antigone, Sophocles reveals a story of a character who responds significantly to an injustice. After a war between brothers’ Eteocles and Polyneices, both brothers are slain, but Creon, Antigone’s uncle, refused to bury Polyneices due to him fighting against the city. Antigone, the main character, decides to bury her brother against Creon’s orders, resulting in a conflict between the already cursed family. With the unjust refusal from Creon to not bury Polyneices, Antigone decides to stand up against this injustice, even if it means losing her life. Sophocles writes about a stubborn Antigone who believes she is following God’s law, in order to create justice between the cursed family and solve the unjust created by Creon, to
