When one graduate’s college it is usually one of the happiest days of their lives, they finally get to quit their low paying job and get a job that is much higher paying and hopefully a job they enjoy. However most of the time these newly college grads do not get to go buy a new car, or a house, or whatever else their heart desires instead; they have to spend about the next 20 years paying off their student loans. But what if there was another way, so that these newly grads do not have to spend 20 years paying off loans? Well maybe there is because in January of 2015 President Barrack Obama proposed the idea of free community college. This sounds great does it not?
Based on both essays, I would have to say that community colleges are essential for people who need an education at a lower cost from the classes to books. Some colleges however teach complicated courses that have really nothing to do with a major, but is still required in order to get a degree and that college experience of fun and hard work is just gone according with Perlstein’s essay. Community education is key factor for specific career areas that could help people gain the necessary education without the extra elective credits that students would pay for even if it has nothing to do with what kind of job they want. Addison’s essay is my favorite out of the two because it uses the good point’s in Perlstein’s essay and bringing it into hers and to help prove her point about two year colleges getting their recognition they deserve for excellent education and inexpensive, yet effective methods to help people who can’t afford a regular college without extreme
Community College Today In the essay “Two Years Are Better Than Four,” Liz Addison, gives her viewpoint on higher education and why community college is important. She compares the learning experience at two-year community colleges to that of 4-year universities. Throughout her essay, Addison expresses her opinions on why community colleges are in many ways a better choice for many students.

Liz Addison’s essay, “Two Years Better Than Four,” was first published in the New York Times Magazine back in September of 2007. Addison went to two community colleges and majored in biology; earning her degree in 2008. In her essay, she is responding to Rick Perlstein's article “What’s the Matter with College?” in which he claims, “College as America used to understand it is coming to an end” (211). Addison refutes Perlstein’s claims by saying, “My guess, reading between the lines, is that Mr. Perlstein has never set foot in an American community college” (212).
Reich supports this claim that not everyone can succeed in a four-year liberal arts college by bringing up three key problems: financial instability, lack of employment, and eventual obsolete education due to four-year liberal arts degrees.. Reich believes the main cause these issues are experienced by students are because of lack of awareness of gateways and the fact that very few gateways are opened to students. Reich argues that another gateway for success that won’t cause financial instability is to pursue technician jobs. In order to achieve mastery over technical knowledge only two years of study at a community college is required which can lead to a preference for students versus a four-year liberal arts college because of extremely low cost and time. Reich also believes that since technology is constantly changing specific knowledge from a four-year liberal arts college may become obsolete.

Can Two Be Greater Than Four? Does college really matter? Has college lost its rite to passage appeal? Can one still go to college and be successful in the pursuit of self-discovery? These are the types of questions that Liz Addison challenges in her short essay “Two Years Are Better Than Four”. By taking into account my own experience as a current community college student and advocate, in this response to Addison’s essay I choose to elaborate on her views of community college being better than a four year university in the sense of offering a better college experience.
As the month of November comes along annually, every single high school senior is forced to decide which path they are going to take after graduating. For some, it is easy to choose which college to attend and how to pay for it. But, for many, it is extremely difficult to figure out a way to get the funds for college. So, they choose the community college route. Community college is drastically cheaper than tuition at a four year university.
First, community colleges like Northeast Alabama Community College are fairly easy on the pocketbook .However, unlike community colleges, the fees at an accredited four-year college are often very expensive . Community colleges also seem to be the popular choice because of the convenience they offer students. Contradicting to the convenience of a community college, a four-year college presents many inconveniences to students. Instructors at a community college teach students on a more personal level. Unlike community colleges, students at a four-year college are normally taught by a teaching assistant who has no personal connection with the students.
In the United States a community college is defined as a nonresidential junior college offering courses to people living in a particular area. They are post secondary schools and are also referred to as junior colleges, vocational or technical schools because generally the course of study is for two years. The student can earn an associates degree or certification and/or continue their education by transfering to a four year college to complete their educational pursuits and earn a Bachelor 's degree. Community colleges started in the late 1800’s and have grown and evolved over the years. Today many four year colleges and universities have become so expensive to attend that many prospective students are opting for the more affordable alternative of a community college for their first two years of study where they can save money by living at home and taking classes that will transfer to a four year institution, however, there are students that cannot afford the lower cost of community colleges.
For many people, college is an important key for their future. Some people go to college for the job opportunities and the new windows it can open. Others go just for the education and experience. A good education is beneficial from many different viewpoints; in truth, it is a possibility that one's adult life could be much harder than people care to think. One can have better wealth, is less likely to be unemployed, and a much higher chance of being closer to your family.
