Community Policing and Homeland Security
Arguments For The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) views the deployment of community policing as a front-line counterterrorism strategy. “The lesson learned from fighting traditional crime is that prevention is the most effective approach in dealing with crime, fear and social disorder” (Docobo, 2005). Taking on lessons learned from traditional crime prevention and expanding it towards homeland security augments national security as law enforcement and their communities become the eyes and ears in the fight against extremism and terrorism from a domestic and foreign threat. DHS realizes the great counterterrorism value of community policing that it has created and awarded community policing development grants that enable law enforcement agencies to receive training that help to establish channels of communication with their diverse communities. The key to community policing is for law enforcement to bring community leaders and average citizens into the fold to create transparency and adapt law enforcement policies that are tailored to the community’s needs.

“They contend that these strategies are ineffective because they do not address the social issues which cause crime to occur” (Rukus, Warner Zhang, 2017).
