Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome were two of the most powerful nations in the history of the world. Each of them, at some point, had control of nearly the entire known world at that time. One reason for their successes was their strong governments. The United States government is based mostly on the governments of these two nations and without them, our country would be very different place today.
Ancient Greece’s form of government changed many times over the course of their success. Some of these forms of government worked better than others, but all of them worked well enough to keep their command over most of eastern Europe. Ancient Greece was separated into city-states that traded with each other and worked together for the success of Greece, but otherwise, they were completely independent. As N. S. Gill explains, a republic is a mix of a democracy, an oligarchy, and a monarchy. The power was divided into two groups: an executive branch and a legislative branch. The executive branch consisted of two consuls, who had equal power and worked together to run the everyday government. These consuls were voted for by the popular assemblies and had one year terms. The legislative branch was made up of two parts: the Senate, and the Assembly of Centuries. The Senate had more power than the Assembly of Centuries, and consisted of 300 patrician men. The Assembly of Centuries was mainly responsible for electing the consuls.
The Roman Republic had an extremely good system, but in the early stages of the republic, the power was given almost completely to the patricians, or the rich, landowning families in Rome. The plebeians, or the middle and lower class citizens, had almost no voice in the government. However, this unfairness would not last long and laws were created to distribute the power more
