In regards to finding common ground, it is believed that all humans are the same on the inside despite race or religion. Kofi Annan said, “We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race.” This statement emphasizes the belief of finding common ground between humans. Two authors in this unit also argue that individuals should find similarities between themselves.. Quindlen states, “Like many improbable ideas, when it actually works, it’s a wonder” (Quindlen, pg.6). In this quote, Quindlen reveals that the United States is a fascinating and confusing concept since it is a very successful country yet it is filled with problems. This text is incredibly significant since it describes Quindlen’s position, which can be shared by many people, on America and how, somehow, it is a leading country in spite of all the bigotry, racism, and discrimination. It is truly a wonder, as Quindlen describes it, since other countries have fallen in the past due to those exact problems. Finally, the author concludes, “... patriotism is partly taking pride in this unlikely ability to throw all of us together in a country that across its length and breadth is as different as a dozen countries, and still be able to call it by one name” (Quindlen, pg.6). This quote reinforces the idea that Americans are united against all odds because all of the Unites States is about as diverse as twelve countries and still, all these people show great patriotism in the United States. Anna Quindlen built on the concept that America is an improbable idea that somehow works in her argumentative article, “A Quilt of a Country.” Both of these authors were able to support the idea that individuals are able to find common ground and unite despite their differences.
