The essays of J. T. Bushnell (2013) and Annie Paul (2012) apply neurophysics to effective writing, breaking down on how the emotional area of the brain receives strong descriptions. Basically, in comparison, focusing on what we see with our brains and not our eyes.
Both of these essays are similar in regards to neurological information received by the brain. The writers focus on the same research citing the recent findings from neuroscience experiments about how sensory information affects the brain. Each cites information claiming the brain does not make much of a distinction between reading about an experience and encountering it in real life (Bushnell & Paul, 2012). He starts with “Once I burst into tears during a Tobias Wolff reading” (Bushnell, 2013). Additionally, as he tells his personal story there is a heavy engagement of pathos throughout the essay, telling stories of his past experiences, especially when Bushnell stated, “It just so happen that Wolff was my own literary hero, and that he had workshopped a story of mine the day before, so this passage held special resonance for me” (Bushnell, 2013, pp. 48-49). I think that this passage really showed his emotion and his passion towards writing, more so that a writer he looked up to was showcasing one of his own stories.
When looking for the application logos to Bushnell’s essay it is easy to find the logic and reasoning to his essay. He states, “To put it simply, stories should be aimed not at our heads but at our hearts. And this is where things get interesting, because description actually allows access to our hearts in a neurophysical way” (Bushnell, 2013, pp. 50-51).
Another good example, “As our brains are busy converting language into meaning, our lower brains are forming quick and automatic associations between the thing being described and the nature of the description” (Bushnell, 2013, p. 55).
In Bushnell’s essay, you can find techniques of ethos as he references a few known credible authors such as his literary hero Tobias Wolff, developmental psychologist Kenneth Kaye and Neurophysiologist Paul Bach-y-Rita
