Civil War and Sectionalism The Civil War united the nation and made some drastic changes but did not reduce sectional antagonism. By the end of the war, the United States was a stronger union. Some changes were made because of the war but sectional antagonism was not one of those changes made. The Civil War revoked the states’ ability to secede from the union, making it harder for the states to become independent. This made the states have to work with the union and make peace.
