Animalism vs Communism
George Orwell’s, Animal Farm, portrays a dystopian society that is centered around the idea of Animalism. The system the animals use closely resembles Communism because of its allegorical connection to the Russian Revolution. They closely relate to each other because they both have a dictator, both want to go against their oppressors, and both claim that everyone is equal.
The first reason why Animalism and Communism coincide with each other is because they both have a dictator. In this story, the dictator is a very smart pig named Napoleon. For example, the narrator explains,”In April, Animal Farm was proclaimed a Republic, and it became necessary to elect a president. There was only one candidate, Napoleon, who was elected unanimously”(Orwell 80). The animals all live in fear of Napoleon because he is starting to become a very powerful leader. In Animal Farm, the pigs and dogs become elevated at a higher status compared to the remainder of the animals on the farm. For instance, the narrator describes what is left of the commandments of Animalism. “There was nothing there now except a single commandment. It ran: All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”(Orwell 92).It is portraying that some animals, like the pigs and the dogs, are held on a higher pedestal than the rest of the animals. We can closely compare the animals and the pigs with the proletariat and bourgeoisie classes. For example, this article states, “While the bourgeoisie class continues to gain wealth and power, the proletariat falls in a downward spiral of social and economic crisis”(megaessays.com). The pigs represent the bourgeoisie while the rest of the animals are considered the proletarians. There is definitely an unbalance of equality in this dystopian
