Another example comes from Bel and the Dragon, which is from the Apocrypha and considered the fourteenth chapter of Daniel. Here, Daniel meet with King Astyages, who was king of the Babylonians. At this time the Babylonians started worshiping an idol called Bel. In verse seven, Daniel smiled, and said, O king, be not deceived: for this is but clay within, and brass without, and did never eat or drink anything. Daniel was instilling doubt within King Astyages court. The king then called for the priests of Bel to prove otherwise. Eventually the priests told the king to prepare the table and then seal the door with the king’s signet (verse eleven). Before the king sealed the door, Daniel had his servants spread ashes throughout the temple, in the presence of the king alone. Verse fifteen then says, “Now in the night came the priests with their wives and children, as they were wont to do, and did eat and drink up all.” In the morning, the king opened the door and exclaimed when he saw that food and wine was gone, but Daniel laughed. Daniel told the king to look at the pavement, at which point the king saw the footprints of men, women and children.
