He is a god just like Zeus or Poseidon who possesses a great deal of power and if need be can use that power to hurt or destroy. Gods are always trying to teach mortals a lesson, but Dionysus is a god who constantly teaches people that betraying or doing wrong by a god can lead to very serious trouble.
