Why “The Catcher in the Rye” Should Not Be Made Into a Movie The Catcher in the Rye is a book written by J.D. Salinger, published in 1951, about a boy called Holden who struggles through the stage of becoming and adult and still being a teenager. The character Holden is a very complex character with many feelings, which has turned The Catcher in the Rye into a famous book, and as a result many people have been wanting to turn this piece of literature into a movie. However, I think that The Catcher in the Rye should not be turned into a movie because the story is told in first person and is mostly the main character’s thoughts in his head, the characters in The Catcher in the Rye are all very complex, especially Holden, and it would be nearly impossible for these characters to be portrayed by actors. Lastly, J.D. Salinger did not want the book to be turned into a movie, so it would be wrong to create a movie out of The Catcher in the Rye. …show more content…

Most of the story wouldn’t be able to be told just because you can’t really express thoughts without speaking, and most of the book is told in thoughts, and there is little to no dialogue. For example, if you take the part in the book where Holden talks about people like Jane Gallagher or talks about his brother Allie or pretty much anything else, he goes on and on about whatever he is talking about, and that would be bad material for a movie. You can’t really act out what a person is thinking in his head. More than half the book is in self dialogue, so the most important parts that happen inside Holden’s head that tell about what he is feeling and what he is going through can’t be told because those can’t be acted
