Do you remember a time when you put the blame on someone because you want a solution to your problem or issue? Why? We often place blame, hate, and discriminate against and use excuses to solve our problems. We have forgotten to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes because we could never see ourselves in that situation. We use blame to direct issues away from ourselves because we don’t have a grasp to understand what the problem is entirely. In the Holocaust, many bystanders stood back and watched their fellow Jews being slaughtered. The bystanders thought that it wasn’t their problem or issue to deal with. They also believed that someone else would deal with it. In the end, no one stood up, because no one wanted to take responsibility and assist their friends and family. There are animals being pulled away by these terrible things, but when they say they’ve come to take all the animals with feathers, the animals check themselves to see if they were in the clear. Once they were in the clear, they didn’t want to help one another because they felt they had less responsibility because there were others present who could also respond. While Anne Frank was in hiding they had helpers people who would get them food and other supplies. Miep Gies and Victor Krugler stepped in and weren’t bystanders. They helped the Franks, the Van Danns, and Mr. Dussel through the era of bystanders. They added responsibility to their own lives, and they added stress on top of having a job, living knowing they had to take care of 8 people in hiding and they had to run their own families too.
