“Fences,” a play written in 1986 by American playwright August Wilson, set in the 1950’s in Pittsburgh,PA highlights the aftermaths of slavery as well as legalized discrimination and African American lives. The protagonist Troy Maxson (Father) spends his time telling his son Cory Maxson how to spend his future because Troy’s life was not up to his expectations due to misfortunes and mistakes made by him and not being able to play in the Major Leagues, but now works as a garbage collector. Troy prohibits Cory from playing Football and going off to college. Their relationships begins to deteriorate as he starts interfering more into his life. Also, the play is based in the backyard, but in the movie, the viewers see different aspects and it doesn’t all takes place in the backyard of the Maxson household. The movie goes in depth with how African Americans lived in the time of 1950s and what they had to deal with in life. Troy Maxson was a guy who had high dreams to play on the Major League baseball team, but his life was suddenly destroyed when he went jail due to the mistakes made in life and now he is a garbage collector, “All I want them to do is change job description. Give everyday a chance to drive the truck.” Troy is ticked off about the racial inequality going on at his job as a garbage collector. The white men all get to drive the trucks, while the black men have to collect and dump the trash in the back. In the movie, the viewer can see the emotions and frustration that is feeling on how his life is going during the times of segregation. Viola Davis, who played Rose portrayed the character as a godly loving mother, who loved her family and stood by her husband and son, “Why don’t you let the boy go ahead and play football Troy? Ain’t no harm in that. He’s just trying to be like you with the sports.” Rose sets out her motherly views to convince her husband Troy not hold their son
