Medical television shows have captivated audiences throughout the world with their addicting dramatizations and comic relief. Many viewers might compare Grey’s Anatomy and Scrubs due to their similar settings and portrayal of elements by certain characters. While the TV shows Grey’s Anatomy and Scrubs appear to replicate each other through their genres, main character’s personalities, and medical accuracy, the two are actually quite different types of medical television series. What sets Grey’s Anatomy apart from Scrubs is the reality of the lives of residents and interns compared to what is portrayed in the show. Grey’s Anatomy portrays interns and residents inaccurately correlated to their real lives. Inside an actual hospital setting, residents do not get to scrub in on all of the fantastic surgeries like they do in Grey’s Anatomy. Even though the medical procedures and terminology is fairly accurate, the show tends to lean away from the medicine and more into the relationships between the interns, residents, and others. Unlike Grey’s Anatomy, where the interns seem to unprofessionally talk to their superiors the wrong way, in an actual hospital, everyone treats everyone with the same amount of respect. On the other hand, Scrubs demonstrates the hustle and bustle of hospital life more realistically. For instance, the relationships are usually between doctors of the same status in the hospital, compared to Grey’s Anatomy, where an intern can be involved with an attending without being frowned upon. Scrubs also accurately depicts the specialty stereotypes you would typically see in a hospital such as interns being called “fleas”, or orthopedic doctors being called “jocks”. In contrast to Grey’s Anatomy, Scrubs displays the realism of a first time procedure as being terrifying, which is how it actually is if you were to experience it in real life.
