In the story, “Harrison Bergeron” by Vonnegut and the story, “The Pedestrian” by Bradbury both of the stories warn that if the government has too much power and control over the citizens the society will fall apart and cause chaos within the community. In the text the author states, “ The minute people start cheating on laws, what do you think happens to society?” (Vonnegut 3) another piece of evidence that goes along with the one above is, “Reckon it’d fall all apart,” said Hazel.” (Vonnegut 3) Rules are set in place so that everyone stays in check and the community doesn’t just do whatever they want to do and put everyone else's lives at risk. In this story if you are too smart or too pretty you have to wear something to cover up what you couldn't control (ex: what you look like and how smart you are) this is simply not fair and can cause people to become angry and lash out at others and the government. Another test states, “And you have a viewing screen in your house to see with?”.. “No.” (Bradbury 4) In this text, everyone has TVs that the government uses to control them and make them stay inside their house. The government does this to control its citizens and make sure that they are doing the right thing. The government should not be able to do this to citizens because all people should have at least some sort of freedom to do whatever they want and not have to be controlled by the government all the time. I do think that the government should be able to help the people of the community and be able to watch over them at times but I think it's just wrong to control everything they do. To sum up, in both of these texts the government has too much control and power over the citizens of the community and it's simply not
