Popular Mechanics Lamb to the Slaughter In the short stories, “Popular Mechanics” by Raymond Carver and “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Raold Dahl includes both stories have lack of communication that can lead to disasters. The husbands are leaving their wives, the main character have committed an accident that leads to tragedy. The setting takes place at home and the stories finishes off with a cliffhanger so we don’t know what happens at the end.
Both, the film version by Alfred Hitchcock and the short story version by Roald Dahl of Lamb to the Slaughter had the overall message of everything a person does has a consequence. With both the film and the movie makes Mary and Patrick Maloney settle their divorce. One of the interesting things about the film and the story is the characters. As Patrick Maloney throws all the love and care that Mary gave as he explained about having a divorce with the result of getting hit with a lamb leg by Mary, which made her plan something devilish to get away with it the hard way.
Rohl Dahl’s short story, Lamb to the Slaughter, is psychological thriller that sequences Mary Maloney’s rapid descent into madness, which started with murdering her husband. Dahl spends the first few paragraphs of the story setting up Mary’s character to be a doting and loving wife. A stark contrast to the murder she committed in cold blood, despite all that though, it can be argued that this murder would bet categorized as second degree. As stated before, Mary Maloney is set up to be a doting housewife who is patiently waiting for her husband to return home from work.

After reading and writing the three stories, articles, and videos I learned that they all share a common central idea. All three stories, articles, and videos share one central idea which is that all the wives killed their husbands. To explain my point, I'm going to talk about the central idea of lamb to the slaughter, 48 hours video, and the daily mail article. First of all, in the story of lamb to the slaughter the husband tells his wife that he doesn't want to be with her which eventually leads her to kill him. After the husband told her that he doesn't want to be with her anymore "she couldn't feel anything at all- except a slight nausea and a desire to vomit".
Today abuse and divorce are more and more in everyday life. I think the most similar of these two stories are that unhappy woman can do many things like killing. If we talk about "Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl we would be talking about a perfect crime. Mary lives a life of a housewife and devoted wife until she murders her husband. The short story Lamb of the Slaughter by Ronald Dahl uses situational irony and dramatic irony. The use of the dramatic irony adds humor to the story. Whereas situational irony adds suspense, and leaves the audience wondering. The humor of dramatic irony is that we know how the husband died, and the cops do not . The audience learns that Mary Maloney "swung the big frozen leg of the lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head" (pg. 360).
The theme intertwined in both short stories is betrayal. To betray someone is to be disloyal. Tessie and Mary Maloney have either betrayed someone or someone has betrayed them. The short story “Lamb to the Slaughter” creates an unexpected outcome for the reader using the main character’s love for her child. We see this after the reader meets the main character, Mary Maloney, and her husband and it’s revealed he is going to leave her and their newborn child. In response to this she ”swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head. ”(p.2) This comes as a big shock to the readers since throughout the story she has been betrayed as a doting wife that would never inflict, or even wish, ill will against her husband.

The suspenseful short story “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl is about a 6 month pregnant 1953 housewife, named Mary Maloney. Happy with her seamless marriage and life, Mary eagerly awaits in their cozy apartment for her husband Patrick to come home, not expecting her life to terribly change. Patrick comes home in fury, finally telling Mary that he is leaving her, and as maddened and heartbroken as she was; she showed no emotion toward what just occurred. A man vs. self-conflict arises and she kills Patrick with the leg of a lamb she was supposed to cook him for dinner. As the story progresses, Mary has a man vs. self-conflict, where she does not know what to do with Patrick’s murder case and her emotions start to change.
The reader comes to realize that Minnie murdered her husband due to something as insignificant and petulant as a small bird -well that is how the men saw the situation. After

Patrick was a police officer; his wife stayed at home, which was typical for the 1950s, which was the time period of the story. The couple had been, so it seemed, happy throughout their marriage. In fact, Mary was pregnant with a baby boy.
Lamb to the Slaughter is an action packed short story about a wife who is let down by her husband and proceeds to kill him as an act of revenge. Obviously much more happens in this story consisting of humour, action, mystery and irony. Roald Dahl is a master of writing short stories in ways that attract readers, draw them into what is happening through using literary elements and universal themes to make the story relatable to the readers. In this story the main literary elements were foreshadowing, situation and dramatic irony, imagery and symbolism which really drew me in and kept me attached to the story. Literary elements are what make a story powerful and attracts readers to continue reading in the story and in this story they highlight the universal theme of Revenge and Betrayal.
