Patterns Science is a new curriculum created in Beaverton, Oregon designed for implementation across the state. The high school sequence includes freshman Physics, sophomore Chemistry, and junior Biology. Salem-Keizer school district is currently piloting the curriculum in hopes of adopting it by 2024. Instructors in the Salem-Keizer school district are tasked with implementing the curriculum. This process has been underway for two years with Physics and Chemistry being delivered and Biology to follow for this year’s juniors. I personally teach Chemistry and will focus on DCI PS3.D Energy in Chemical Processes and Everyday Life and the progression of standards HS-PS3-3, HS-ESS1-1, HS-PS4-5, and HS-LS2-5 …show more content…

Physics addresses standards from this DCI twice. In Unit 5 the stanadard HS-PS4-5 is met as students learn solar cells capture the sun’s energy and produce electrical energy. HS-PS3-3 is met in Unit 6 when students evaluate the ways in which energy can be transformed. Chemistry builds upon these ideas in Unit 3 when we meet HS-ESS1-1 to understand fusion releases radiation that eventually travels from the sun to the Earth. In Biology, these concepts are taken a step further in Unit 6 when students learn photosynthesis and cellular respiration utilize solar energy to create life in standard HS-LS2-5. By the end of their third science class, students will recognize energy created through fusion processes in the sun is transformed on earth by lifeforms in a process called photosynthesis (Patterns Science, …show more content…

For example, the first Chemistry lesson in Unit 1 includes a powerpoint and a Cornell Notes template. The premade powerpoint has imbedded notice/wonder formative strategies for the first seven slides and HKWL (Know, Want to Know, Learned) on the next three slides (Patterns Science, 2019). The curriculum also includes word wall templates for every unit and indicates in the slideshows when a new word should be added to the wall. The Patterns Science curriculum provides almost scripted materials, meaning instructors who implement it have no other option than to do the exact same
