The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, includes the storyline of a woman named Hester, one of the town’s women who commit adultery with a male in the town while her husband, Roger Chillingworth, is away. Chillingworth comes back to town disguised as a doctor and carries out his secret, evil desires. Another well-known American novel, Moby Dick, written by Herman Melville, carries out the act of evil in one of its main characters. Captain Ahab is obsessed with the desire to kill Moby Dick after his leg was taken in an earlier attempt to kill Moby Dick. Throughout the story, his desires take over his mind. Chillingworth is mad at Dimmesdale for committing adultery with his wife while he was away in England. Chillingworth wants revenge because Dimmesdale will not admit to the fact that he is Pearl’s father. Arthur Dimmesdale, instead allows Hester Prynne, his lover, and Pearl, his child, stand without him on the scaffold in front of the townspeople for public shame. In the other novel, Captain Ahab wants to kill Moby Dick because the whale took his leg when he was trying to kill it the first time.
