Awalu Ahmed Hour 1 Huck Compare/Contrast Paper Mrs.Johnson Huck Finn vs. Secret Life of Bees The two books that will be compared are The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Secret Life of Bees. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a book about a boy and a runaway slave and their journey of trying to escape their circumstances. While The Secret Life of Bees is a book about a girl who runs away from home and ends up staying with a beekeeper who teaches her a lot. These books have many similarities which I will compare. The criteria the books will be compared by are tests and challenges faced by the protagonists, mentors that help and guide the protagonists, and moments of insights or epiphanies. In Huckleberry Finn Huck’s mentor is Jim. When huck and Jim are riding on the raft and separated from each other Jim says this “My heart wuz mos’ broke bekase you wuz los’, en I didn't keyer no mo’ what become er me en de raf’. En when I wake up en fine you back agin’ all safe en soun’ de tears come en I coulda got down on my knees en kiss yo’ foot I’s so thankful. En all you wuz thinkin bout wuz how you could make a fool uv ole Jim wid a lie.”(Twain 102) This quote shows that Jim considers Huck a very good friend and was hurt when Huck tried to prank him. This shows that Jim is indeed a companion and mentor to Huck. However in The Secret Life of Bees Lily’s mentor is the black beekeeper that she stays with after running away, August. After May died August tells Lily this: “Putting black cloths on the hives is for us. I do it to remind us that life gives way into death, and then death turns around and gives way into life.”(Kidd 149) This quote shows that August is teaching Lily things about life and death.
