Melinda and Me In the story Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the main character Melinda has many different turning points in her life. Melinda doesn't know how to deal with these turning points yet. These turning points made it a really difficult time for her as a freshman in high school. Melinda's identity is similar yet different to mine. We both act differently in each situation that we are in and that has shaped our identity. Melinda and I are different in many ways, but we are also similar. The first way that we are different is that we have very different personality traits. Melinda's personality traits are artistic, reserved, and very observant. We know that she is very artistic when it says in the book that Melinda's sanctuary is the art room because it is a place of creativity. This shows that she likes art very much because she can express herself through her artwork. My personality traits are outgoing, intelligent, and humble. I am very outgoing to do things that I have never done before. I am also very humble in the things that I do like sports, academics, etc. The second way we are different is in how we use our language and speaking to express ourselves. Melinda is very closed off and she doesn't talk to many people. In the book, it says "All that crap you hear on TV about communication and expressing feelings is a lie. Nobody really wants to hear what you have to say,"says Melinda. This is showing that she doesn't believe in communication and she thinks it is a lie. I am very open to new people, I use my words to express myself when I am talking to someone. The final way that Melinda and I are different is our most prized possessions. Melinda's most prized possession is her artwork and supplies. We know this because she says that the art room is her favorite place to be. My most prized possession is my bible.
