Manipulation is a form of psychoanalysis that can be used to determine what caused a person to act in a specific way. Dr. Harold Hong from PsychCentral interprets emotional manipulation to be “a form of psychological manipulation in which a person seeks to control another person’s emotions” (Lawrenz, Lori). Dr. Harold Hong is an expert in the field of psychological manipulation. He elaborates on how manipulation drives the desire to control another person. Romeo manipulated Juliet to look past his actions, despite the length he went to kill Tybalt. After she was under Romeo’s manipulation, Juliet’s only desire was to be with Romeo, despite any costs that would follow. Furthermore, Juliet was more devastated by Romeo being banished from Verona, as a result of killing Tybalt, than the death of her cousin Tybalt. Melinda’s interactions with others at school further displays how they have manipulated her as the novel goes on. Melinda’s art teacher, Mr. Freeman, elaborates that she had “already let them beat the creativity out of [her]” (Anderson 11). Melinda’s trauma from before the beginning of her freshman year in high school managed to destroy Melinda’s creativity. However, Mr. Freeman is unaware of this and manipulates Melinda into thinking that she had already lost her creative abilities at such a young age. Melinda helped Heather with projects that would let Heather fit in. Melinda did not realize that Heather was manipulating her until later in the novel when Heather came crawling back for Melinda’s assistance. Hence, Juliet and Melinda both share relationship issues caused by manipulation through interactions with other people in their daily lives. Juliet and Melinda were under the impression as a result of manipulation, that they had no solutions to their problems; therefore, causing hasty decisions to be made as their stories progressed. Romeo conveys the idea to Juliet that she must get married to him as soon as possible, since he convinced Juliet they already were in love with one another. Romeo shapes the idea that she was the only one by conveying “th’ exchange of thy love’s faithful vow” (Shakespeare 2.2 127).
