“Walked with you once upon a dream” – Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. (Lawrence and Fain, 1) This is one of the song lines from the popular Disney movies Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty. The original stories kid’s movies are based off of are not as happy as the material made today. Fairytales began as a warning sign, warning of the consequences the future held. The fairytale Maleficent most people know of today isn’t an original. In the original version of Sleeping Beauty, titled Sun, Moon, and Talia, it warns, a man has a large amount of power that he takes for granted. Instead of punishment for extreme actions in the original version man is rewarded. The changes made to make the stories differentiate were made for good reason. One similarity in the original and modern stories is, both fathers tried to keep their daughters from harm by forbidding what would cause harm from the kingdom. Secondly both princesses were awakened. One difference between the two stories is, the princess is raped in the modern version. Secondly, Talia gives birth in her slumber, Aurora doesn’t. Thirdly, the king in Sun, Moon, and Talia burns his wife. Fourthly, in Maleficent the princess is awoken by someone older and a girl, while in the original version the princess is awakened by her kids. Walt Disney decided to show case different types of love. Meaning he showed a mother and daughters bond, a best friend bond, and many others. To show off these different bonds however the original story had to be changed to make a kid friendly version. To create a kid’s movie, the part about sex was taken out. The older version served as a warning while the modern version serves as hope. Back in the olden day’s fairytales symbolized the present and served as a cautionary tale. While now fairytales have taken on a whole new meaning, the meaning of hope. Many differences and similarities are found throughout both the modern and original forms of Sleeping
