Comparing and Contrasting “the Lesson” and “Stand by Me” In the stories “The Lesson” and “Stand By Me” there are obvious similarities such as slang, lack of authority, and ignorance. The contrast are setting, plot, and characters. In both stories the children characters use colorful language to express their feelings. Most of the conversations they have throughout the stories is told in slang. The narrator of “The Lesson” stated, “Sugar done swiped her mama’s lipstick, we ready.”(Bambara). In Stand by me when Gorde did bad in cards he shouted, “Piss up a rope!”(King). These characters use slang and colorful language because they have been exposed to it.

In Stand by me the boys had to worry about Chris’s brother Eyeball and his friend group. The group would bully and harass them. In the lesson no other characters have conflict with the main ones.

The kids go to a toy store in Harlem along with parks within the city. The setting of Stand by me is in the summer of 1959 in Castlerock, Oregon. It is a rural place and everyone knows each other.
