Each page includes two rhyming words found at the end of the second and fourth line to promote interest and play on words. Repetition is a fourth feature used by the author where she repeats ‘How about you?’ at the end of each four-line rhyming section. Vocabulary is used cleverly by the author to introduce geographical names and locations as well as new terminology such as ‘hail’ ‘strife’ and colloquialisms such as ‘G’day mate!’ These features can be used to support four of Serafini and Moses’ ways of developing a child’s reading ability (2014, p. 465).

When writing a novel authors must think not only about what they are about to write, but why they are going to write it. They have to select diction that will convey their inner thoughts and emotions. There is a need of imagery to pull the reader into the story so they will not lose their drive to read. Tone must constantly shift in order to keep the reader so engaged that they are determined to read until it all makes sense. From the longest to the shortest sentence, there is a reason -- called syntax-- why that sentence is there.
The more I understood the more amusement and comedy I got out of the story. The language in the story was a big reason as to why I did not understand the story the first time. The terms Mrs. Ulgine Barrows used in the book were hard to comprehend such as; "Are you scraping around the bottom of the pickle barrel?”, “Are you sitting in the catbird seat?”, “Are you lifting the oxcart out of the ditch?”, “Are you tearing up the pea patch?” and “Are you hollering down the rain barrel?”
In stories tone has to be displayed in different ways. One of the ways tone is shown is through words. The more descriptive a story is, the more the reader can understand the tone of the story. Diction and the setting of a story both play a major role in the tone. The words an author chooses to use affects the reader’s view of the story.
“As I listened, I looked up into what should have been the dark autumnal evening sky, but instead the haze of flashing police lights, streetlamps, giant spotlights, the headlights of cars, the kaleidoscopic reflection off the cold concrete and the glass of Police Plaza 1, all obscured the sky.” (295). This kind of language builds comprehension and visualization of the scene. Kiely and Reynold’s also use lots of dialogue to develop the main ideas. It also helps to understand characters better.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is an example of the use of diction. Mark Twain, the author, has the boys in the story have an out of pocket conversation. Diction helps the reader imagine the story as if it was they were the ones having this dialogue.
The essay “I’ve got a Few Pet Peeves About Sea Creatures” by Dave Berry heavily uses language based comedy. Language comedy means focusing on what is said and how it is said, and has many types such as one-liners and puns. For example, a hyperbole is used in this sentence of the essay, “So we got an aquarium and prepared it with special water and special gravel and special fake plants and a special scenic rock so the fish would be intellectually stimulated and get into a decent college” (p.6). This sentence from the essay shows a hyperbole and language based comedy because it uses exaggeration, saying that the fish could be smarter and get into a good college if the aquarium is filled with nice things like gravel and plants, which is obviously
