Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss is well known for writing children’s books. He is also known for being really politically involved. Some of the books he wrote had underlying political themes. In this paper we are going to talk about some of the books where this occurs.

The Lorax is one of the most popular stories. It talks about deforestation and how humans destroy nature. The Once-ler symbolizes everyone else in America who doesn’t really care or do anything about the pollution and deforestation. We can see how the mood changes when the sky goes from bright blue to dark gray. This symbolizes that everything was happy and good until the Once-ler started cutting down trees. This may seem like it’s just about a couple of little stories about a turtle who was king over all the other turtles in the pond. Yertle gets on top of a tower of the other turtles and proclaims that he is the king over all of the pond and everyone in it. In my research I have found that Yertle symbolizes Adolf Hitler. The other turtles represent things like freedom, justice, opinions, and equality. In the story Yertle is the tallest thing because he is stacked on top of a bunch of turtles. Just when you think that there is nothing higher than yertle, you turn to the next page and the moon is in the sky. Yertle realizes that the moon is taller than him and he demands that every turtle joins the stack so he can try and reach the moon to get on top of it. Eventually one of the turtles falls and everything crumbles to the ground. Yertle’s reign is over, symbolizing when Hitler’s reign ended.

The Cat in the Hat is one of Dr. Seuss’ most popular books by far. This book has many symbols in the story. First we will talk about the mom. This book was written in the 1950's. During that time the “Nuclear Family” was a very popular idea. In the story there is no father pictured or mentioned (meaning that she was either divorced or had a child out of wedlock), therefore not going along with the idea of a traditional family.
