American Romanticism first gained popularity in the 1820’s. “The Minister’s Black Veil” was published in 1832 and “Fall of the House of Usher” was published in 1839. Both stories are great examples of American Romanticism and contain similar romantic themes, like their supernatural elements. However, the main characters of the two stories are drastically different. To start, Roderick Usher was a very wealthy man. Roderick Usher was born into money and he never had to work a day in his life. Reverend Hopper, however, was not rich. Reverend Hooper actually had to work and he got the pay of a reverend, which was far from a large amount of money. While Roderick Usher lived in his family’s stately home, Reverend Hooper lived in the village’s parsonage.
