This article discusses how badly the corrections officers treat the inmates at Mid-State Correctional Facility in New York. The inmates are beaten and penetrated by foreign objects by the officers that are supposed protect them. Not only are they mistreating the inmates but they are getting away with it as well. There are many instances and examples of inmates from this specific facility, Mid-State Correctional Facility, getting beaten by guards. These allegations of brutality against the inmates are going more viral now than ever.

In 1952, there were a number of riots at the New Jersey State Prison. In order to prevent more riots the prison officials at the New Jersey State Prison decided to allow the inmates to create a council in order to voice their opinions and concerned. If I were a newly appointed warden of the New Jersey State Prison, I would implement the following rules in order to prevent the council from getting out of hand. The agreement with creation of inmates’ council is a privilege not a right and every inmate will be informed as such. Thus, it can be taken away at the warden’s discretion.

As part of the requirements for the discussion assignment in Unit 3, I have been researching the differences and the similarities between County Jails and State Prisons. Some of the ways that County Jails are different form State Prisons are that jails are for temporary holding, and for holding inmates who have been convicted of non-serious crimes and sentenced to serve one year or less (“Jail vs. Prison,” n.d.) Moreover, many of those who are incarcerated in County Jails are awaiting trial and conviction. Furthermore, County Jails are run by local Sheriffs, who are elected in a General election by citizens of the County which they serve. Jails operate work release programs, boot camps, and other specialized services.
In college, Criminal Justice majors are being taught that there are three main components of the criminal justice system: law enforcement, the courts, and corrections. Law enforcement enforces the law, maintains order, and provides services to protect member of the community. The courts ensure that the accused person is viewed as innocent unless they are proven guilty of criminal behavior and determine how they should be punished if found guilty of alleged transgressions. Corrections supervise and counsel convicted offenders in an effort to prevent future crime and protect the public.
My knowledge about corrections and the entirety of the criminal justice system is limited to a few classes taken here at ACU, Movies/TV, and interactions with local law enforcement through ride-alongs and just spending time with officers and attorneys that I know. I think that the time spent with officers, especially during ride alongs offers the most realistic and up close view of the criminal justice system and how the corrections system can succeed (or fail) because of the proximity to offenders and real life interactions with them. I have also spend a small amount of time talking to an assistant US attorney about their job and role within the criminal justice system to gain a better picture of not only the police side of the job, but the prosecution and investigative side of the job. Movies and TV have also formed some amount of knowledge about the corrections system. Movies like Shawshank and the Rock and TV shows like Cops and Live PD have given me an insight into the criminal justice system.
“Correction officers supervise convicted offenders when they are in jail, in prison, or in the community on probation or parole” (National Center for Victims of Crime, 2008). When a defendant is found guilty, they are usually sentenced to time in jail, houses of correction, prisons, probation, or parole. When they are sentenced to time in prison, it is the responsibility of corrections and their officers to ensure that the defendant is treated humanely. It is also their job to make sure that the correctional facility that is holding the offender is safe and secure.
Examining Problems and Their Solutions in The Parole System The United States of America contains the third largest population in the world, which contradicts the fact that the United States has the largest prison population in the world (Aliprandini, and Finley). The fact that their prison population is so large alludes to the reason they would have a strong parole system. Due to contrary belief, this is not the case.
