The Roman Empire was made up of what could now be considered as Western Europe. The Roman Army conquered the empire and a Roman way of life was enforced in these countries. The countries that were conquered were England, Spain, France, Greece, the Middle East and the North African coastal region. The Romans viewed themselves as a large, rich and powerful Empire. They expressed their power by conquering as much land as they could. They found themselves to be superior to the Barbarians of Europe and felt that their empire marked the highest point of human achievement. In ancient times, A barbarian was a member of a people who did not belong to one of the great civilisations such as the Roman, Greek or Christian. They were considered low subjects by the Romans and were the main contributors to the fall of the Roman Empire. The fall of the Roman Empire was largely down to the barbarians, but they are not the only cause. There were other reasons such as high taxes, the soldiers being more loyal to the military than to the emperor and a declining economy. The Romans thought of barbarians as “people who had not attained even the basic civilised state of agriculture, and as nothing more than savages, dwellers in caves, nomads, brigands and warriors.”4 The first of the barbarians were the Goths. They were greedy, dangerous and powerful. They came to the Rome because they were fleeing from a more barbarous enemy, the Huns. They were given protection from the Roman people but it wasn't long before they turned on them. The fall of Rome is an important example of the domino effect. This comes from the idea of a chain reaction. For the fall of Rome, it was the Huns invading the east that had created the domino effect, they pushed into the Goths, who then invaded the Roman
