This means that people should watch their back or they might get hurt because it is difficult to know what people’s next step is. People can be extremely deceiving. More specifically, this situation is illustrated in both stories “The Land Lady” by Roald Dahl and “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty. The theme that connects the story “The Land Lady” by Roald Dahl with the other story “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flarherty is people need to be careful when trusting others because some actions cannot be reversed and people can be capable of unexpected things. In the story, “The Sniper” and “The Land Lady” people need to be careful in trusting others because they can destroy relationships. In “The Sniper '' the sniper is surrounded by enemies described by , “An old woman began to talk to the man in the turret of the car. She was pointing to the roof where the sniper lay. An informer. The sniper fired. The women whirled round and fell with a shriek into the gutter” (O’Flaherty 20). This illustrates how the Sniper knew he could not trust that old woman because they were enemies. The woman obviously had a different opinion than the Sniper and she wanted him to be shot. In the end the violence turned against her because she ended up getting shot and died. One alarming sign should have been when the landlady hasn’t had any guests in 3 years. Billy started getting curious on why that was, “Excuse my asking, but haven’t there been any other guests here except them in the last two or three years?” “No my dear”, she said “only you”(Dahle 73). This just shows that the Land Lady is up to no good and keeps on acting strange. She only had three guests so that already shows that there is something wrong with this place because nobody wants to stay there. She was pushing Billy to drink the tea while telling the story of the missing men knowing that she poisoned the tea. In the story “The Sniper” there was a shootout between the sniper and the enemy. The sniper shot the enemy, “Then the dying man on the roof crumpled up and fell forward. The body turned over and over in space and hit the ground with a dull thud. Then it lay still.” The Sniper became remorseful and was curious as to who his enemy was. “The Sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face” (O’Flaherty 22). The Sniper was willing to shoot any enemy he saw even though he was injured and not able to use his right arm. Trusting people is not always a good thing. People are capable of unbelievable things like killing their own brother just because there is a difference of opinions. It seemed like he would have killed anyone that was his enemy. Be careful not
