Sniper Analysis
War is a devastating topic, which brings forth much action. Which is why Liam O’Flaherty made his short story “The Sniper” based around the Irish Civil War. During the time this piece of literature was written, the Irish Civil War was still ongoing. This event occurred after the time of the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1922, therefore ending the Irish War of Independence. In this was, the Irish Republicans fought against England to gain their independence. The Irish Free State was established by the Anglo-Irish Treaty. After this treaty was signed, the Free Staters and the Republicans had broken out in dispute. The Free Staters supported the treaty while the Republicans did not. He could tell it was fractured. To the best of his ability he bandaged it. Then he thought of a plan. He put his rifle over the side of the parapet wanting to receive shots fired. Once fired at he had pretended that he had been shot and died. Since the man across the street thought he shot and killed the sniper he stood straight up looking across. The Republican sniper smiled and lifted his revolver above the edge of the building and fired. Once the smoke was cleared, the sniper looked and found his enemy struggling to keep his feet and stumbling slowly towards the edge of the building. Then the dying man on the roof fell forward off of the roof hitting the ground with a thud. When the sniper had seen this his lust of battle died in him and became bitten by remorse. He decided to report back to his company commander and leave the roof. When he had reached the street level he was curious as to the identity of his enemy whom he had killed. He wondered if he had known him. Deciding to take another risk the sniper darted across the street. Instantly a machine gun had torn up the street around him. He threw himself face down beside the corpse, making the machine gun stop. The sniper had then turned the dead body over and looked into his brother's
