First, second and third place is at the top of the totem pole when it comes to competing. Sometimes second place is considered the first loser. While this mentality motivates some, it can tear others down. The difference between the people who give up and the people that keep trying is how they deal with adversity. There are many stories on how people cannot overcome their problems; however, there are even more of those who can. Two stories that touch on adversity are “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty and “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. In “The Sniper” a man is determined to kill his enemy. He is so determined to kill his enemy that even when he gets shot, he still perseveres and kills his enemy. In “The Most Dangerous Game” the main character, Rainsford, is being hunted by a vicious animal and he shows determination to win the battle …show more content…

A characteristic that is needed to overcome adversity is determination. The definition of determination means not giving up when times get tough. The Sniper and Rainsford both showed determination when facing their problems. In “The Sniper”, the Sniper was shot by his enemy. He realized that he needed to end the fight once and for all so he did not get hurt again. The Sniper, determined to win the fight became creative. “Taking off his cap, he placed it over the muzzle of his rifle. Then he pushed the rifle slowly upward over the parapet, until the cap was visible from the opposite side of the street” (O’Flaherty 3). When reading more into the story, the Sniper’s plan was to make it look like it was him sitting up instead of the rifle.
