The election of 1800, involved two parties. The Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans. John Adams and Charles C. Pinckney represented the Federalists and Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr represented the Democratic-Republicans. In the election of 1800, the candidates’ supporters wrote letters and articles to make their arguments against the opposing party. They didn’t travel around and give speeches like today.
Party system refers to the way parties are organized, the balance of powers between and within the parties, and the issues or ideas which the parties are organized around. The Federalist and Jeffersonian Republicans were the first party system to immerge in the seventeen nineties. The federalist focused on the concerns of New England merchants. The wanted to rebuild a relationship with Britain, assumption of debt from the revolutionary war, and programs with encouraged manufacturing. The Jeffersonian republics were run with southern agriculture in mind.
Bernie Sanders and the Democratic party share similar views on many of the issues that the United States faces. While they share the same views Sanders is generally seen as leaning more left than most of the general party 's stances. Sanders is pro choice, believes in gender and marriage equality, believes that war should be a last resort option, believes that we should continue our fight with ISIS but the majority of the work should be done by the Muslim nations and we should use coalitions and not try to do it all by ourselves, Sanders wants to make public colleges tuition and debt free, and he wants to have more taxes on the billionaire class, and make them pay their fair share. The parties are who choose the leaders that they want to represent them and support these leaders in the elections. This alone is a big affect parties have had on how Americans vote. Delegates are no longer sent to the electoral college because they represent the people, but because they represent the parties.

Both the Democrats and the Republicans like to think of themselves as the true heirs of Thomas Jefferson. The modern Democrats are historically descended from the Democratic-Republican Party that Jefferson himself organized to thwart the ambitions of Alexander Hamilton (although, ironically, they were known as "Republicans" in Jefferson 's time). Democrats around the country annually celebrate Jefferson-Jackson Dinners, avowedly declaring a connection between Jefferson and the modern Democratic Party. But Republicans claim that their platform of small government and low taxes is more in line with true Jeffersonian philosophy than that of the big-government Democrats.
I think it is interesting how all of these political parties each have their own unique view on economic issues. Looking at the chart, it is clear that the Democratic Party differs greatly from the Libertarian Party and Constitution Party. The Democrats believe deficit spending is necessary during economic downturns while the Libertarians and members of the Constitution Party disagree. These two parties want to eliminate unbalanced budgets. The Constitution Party had an interesting view on this topic because they believe deficit spending will greatly be reduced if the United States stays out of wars taking place in other countries.
Republicans vs. Democrats When the United States of America was founded, George Washington warned against the formation of political parties. By the time the second election came around there were already two political parties, the Federalist and Democratic-Republicans. These parties eventually turned into the Republican and Democratic parties we have today. While these parties have shifted to become almost polar opposites politically, they still share some common goals.
