People are amazing but they always fear death. There are certain limits people have, some either ignore them or use them. Bravery and stupidity are the results of ignoring, and in both stories bravery and courage are in play. Max ran away to safety when he knew the consequences could be deadly. Joey went through Hell, and was almost killed many times. But he stood strong and ended up being back in safety. Albert may have been drafted into the war, but his hope to find Joey was what kept him alive.
