Both are struggling and dealing with conflict that presents obstacles and interferes with their objectives. I will explore both characters and make comparisons between the two to support the idea that while both are dealing with different conflicts, they have many things in common. In Salva’s part of the story, he is facing a difficult journey to walk away from the war.
He is a stronger and smarter man because of what happened to him. Santiago hit a lot of adversity at the beginning of his journey and it prepared him for the worst of his journey. “Now he understood why the owner of the bar had been so upset: he was trying to tell him not to trust that man.” (Coelho 43). He lost it all and he was prepared for anything for the rest of his journey.

As Santiago returns, he encounters more dangers. Desperately protecting his catch, Santiago defends himself and the marlin, from sharks. In vain, Santiago returns home, with a skeleton, except for the head and tail of the marlin. In Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea”, Santiago faces the trials of becoming a fully
By continuing he finds his true inner strength. In the story, the author shows the importance of perseverance, and how to face the many obstacles that people are presented in their lives to complete their goal. In the story the narrator describes the sea as snarling and violent , however at the end the waves just pace and fro, while not being any less violent. Hope and friendship is something that all characters do experience, the narrator gives a description of the budding sense of friendship between the characters. Hope is a prominent idea present in the story, since hope is essentially all the characters have while they are stuck at sea and is something that binds the characters together. However, disappointment is also present and is linked to hope. An example which illustrates this is the scene where the men find a lighthouse and are

Then when he finally gets back to the shore; all he had was the skeleton of the marlin that he took four days to catch and bring back.
"Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated. " By describing the protagonist, Santiago, we see how he relates to nature. His eyes are the same color as his love, la mar. Men spoke of the sea as el mar, which is masculine. They spoke of her as a place, an enemy, another person, a competition.
To start off, the theme of pride and ambition against fate and chance is shown throughout the novel, especially when Santiago continues to go fishing without making a catch. Although, some may see this as an act of perseverance due to Santiago’s diligence, this action is best interpreted through the theme of pride and ambition. First of all, Santiago is considered to be one of the worst forms of unlucky. As the novel states, “he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. . . but after forty days without a fish the boy’s parents had told him that the old man was now definitely ad finally salao, which is one of the worst forms of unlucky” (9).

Hemingway presents the elements of failure and suffering in The Old Man and the Sea by depicting several instances of suffering and failure which the Old Man, Santiago, has to go through throughout the course of the novel. According to Hemingway, life is just one big struggle. In the beginning of the novel itself, The Old Man, is presented as a somewhat frail old man who is still struggling with his life as well as his past failures. His skiff even had a sail which bore great resemblance to “the flag of permanent defeat”, with its multiple patches all over.
