Benjamin Franklin Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston on January 17, 1706. At the age of ten, Benjamin began to help in his father’s shop, cutting candlewicks and filling molds. When he was 12 he went to work as an apprentice in the print shop of his half-brother James. Franklin was not happy with his brother’s shop, so he went to New York. Franklin was married to Deborah Read, the daughter of his landlady, in 1730. She was an uneducated woman who did not share Franklin’s interests in books and science, however, she was devoted to him. She was also a cheerful and thrifty wife. Benjamin Franklin had two sons, and one daughter, his children were William, Francis Folger, and their daughter was named Sarah. William remained loyal to the British
