Comparing Donald Trump And Barack Obama's Presidential Inaugural Speeches

Donald Trump and Barack Obama's Presidential Inaugural Speeches were extremely similar in regards to the use of unifying language, displaying gratitude, mentioning religions. In both speeches, both men make it a priority to say, "We, Our, and Americans" numerous of times. These unifying pronouns assist the audience to feel the inclusiveness of the nation, togetherness and the support of the president-elect at the time. Their intentions when using these pronouns were to establish unity among all Americans of all ethnicities, genders and religions to eliminate division in the country. Furthermore, in both speeches, each man shows their appreciation and gratitude by saying "thank you" to the former president, first family and politicians in office. This goes to show that Trump's goal was to reach the everyday working-class audience in America, while Obama's goal was reach global audience of world, not just America, because he was the first African-American president, so all global attention was focused on him. Also, Trump uses short, choppy sentences in the speech, as he wants to get straight to the point, while Obama regularly uses syntax. As said before, Trump intended on reaching the working-class American, so short and direct sentences keep the focus and attention of the audience assure. Obama wanted to create longer, well-developed sentences to establish the spiritual and motivational aspect of the speech. In addition, Obama says, "We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and non-believers," in his his speech in order to emphasize the inclusiveness and unity of the nation among all people. In contrast, Trump fails to mention any other religion other than Christianity in his speech. This could show Americans that Obama was more accepting of all people, than the more judgmental
