Comparing 'Faking It And Why Women Smile'

Why do men and women act the way they do? Why does a man always act independent, and why does a woman always smile? In the essays "Faking It" by Michael Chabon and "Why Women Smile" by Amy Cunningham these questions are answered. One essay talks about men's actions while the other essay talks about women's actions. Michael Chabon's essay uses his real life examples of how men act, but Amy Cunningham's essay discusses more factual situations. One thing the essays have in common is that both Chabon and Cunningham try and prove a point while having a light attitude. The male gender is the one being evaluated in "Faking It" by Chabon. In the essay, Chabon discusses that men have been taught to act dominant and to never show a lack of confidence. Chabon tells that even his self carries the trait, and his father did too. In the essay "Why Women Smile," Cunningham discusses females instead of males. Cunningham talks about how she has made a vow to smile less because women have become forced by society to smile without being happy. Chabon's essay uses his own real life experiences while Cunningham's essay uses more factual information. In "Faking It" Chabon discusses his own experience of putting up a towel rack and being confident with his wife even when he was clueless and not confident in his own skills. He also voices about a decision he made on a family trip and how he had showed so much confidence that even his wife said she could "see it in his eyes" while he was still not confident in himself. In Cunningham's essay, she uses facts and studies such as a study by Psychologist Paul Ekman that showed 18 different types of smiles. Cunningham also uses pictures of other people rather than herself to show examples of smiles. Chabon's essay and Cunningham's essay use two different styles of illustrations to help the reader
