We all know that in every story there are characters, setting, and plot. Also, there is theme, which is related to characters, setting, and plot but is also distinctly different. The theme for “every action there is and opposite reaction” shows itself in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Return of Simple, and “Flowers for Algernon”. First off, in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain the author uses plot and characters to develop the theme. For example, the character Tom Sawyer lies to get out of school but the reaction from Aunt Polly was not one he was hoping for. To get out of school, Tom lies about his toe hurting badly. “Tom lay thinking. Charlie gets an operation and while the operation takes effect for a while, the effect soon goes away. At first, Charlie gets an operation to triple his I.Q. “Dr Nemur said remember he will be the first human beeng ever to have his intelijence trippled by surgicle meens,” (p.225) “He” is Charlie and he will have his I.Q. tripled with a surgery. The surgery does work. “‘It worked, didn’t it?’” (p.233) “It” is the surgery and just by the spelling and punctuation I can infer that the surgery worked. But, the effects soon start to reverse. “Artificially increased intelligence deteriorates as a rate of time exactly proportional to the quantity of increase,” (p.240) This quote shows that increasing the intelligence artificially will cause it to go back down at the same rate it was increased.
