Two of the more popular folk tale writers were the Grimm Brothers. Jakob and Willhelm Grimm were a year different in age. Born in the eighteenth century, the German brothers worked well together and found interest developing new stories. The focus was to change the target audience of the stories from folklorists to middle-class families and children. The Grimm Brothers referred to their stories as “folk poetry” which refers to, “stories told by ordinary men and women that have been passed down orally through the generations,” (Smith). Many of the tales take place in a European setting which include small villages and castles
