Comparing Houses In Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone

In the fictional world of Harry Potter, there are four houses the students are classified into: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Typically, those associate the houses with bravery, loyalty, intelligence, and cunningness. However, there are different ways the students can find themselves living up to their houses’ traits. First is the house that most people recognize with bravery, Gryffindor. Although this is the main trait, bravery doesn’t always mean defeating the Dark Lord of that era. It could range from sticking up to a bully or even finding the courage to step out of one’s comfort zone. For example, Neville Longbottom was the underdog for most of the Harry Potter series. He was seen as a timid character but in The Sorcerer's Stone, he stood up to Hermione, Ron, and Harry for sneaking out at night. This house embodies the traits of intelligence and knowledge. The renown author, Gilderoy Lockhart, was sorted into this house although he was portrayed as a ditz in the series. However, his ability to adapt other people’s experiences into his own and make his way up to the status of a celebrity. Although this may be seen as a Slytherin’s ambition, Lockhart was able to deceive the mass population showing that he was more intelligent than he let on. Another popular character that is often seen as a ditz is Luna Lovegood. She had a different type of aura about her that made it seem like she lived in a fantasy land (figuratively not literally). Her creativity, another Ravenclaw characteristic, shows that she’s able to give a different perspective to a problem. In the Deathly Hallows, the students were supposed to come up with an idea to close off the bridge entrance to the death eaters.
