What is courage? The dictionary defines it as, “the ability to do something that frightens one”. But the belief that someone is doing something to frighten another seems inaccurate. We’ve all grown up knowing courage as an intangible fire that only comes from within and it helps guide you when you’re feeling doubtful or scared. This type of true courage is displayed by Piggy from the novel, Lord of the Flies, Martin Luther King Jr. in his Letter from Birmingham Jail and Tim O'Brien in the short story, On the Rainy River.
All societies have tales of legendary people, tales of people who do the impossible- heroes. Heroes come in all forms. We have all heard about them, in some story, rather it be in a movie or a book. What you may not realize is that every hero has a journey, a journey that leads them to become the person capable of these amazing feats. This process is called the heroes journey.

The book defends courage as “its when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyways, and you see it through no matter what” (pg. 149) this type of courage is shown in the book from a handful of people I picked the two I believe show courage the best. We should all learn from this quote and show courage just like these characters did. Rowling, both follow The 17 Stages of Joseph Campbell’s Monomyth. Beowulf and Harry Potter prove they are heroes and fit into Campbell’s pattern because of their bravery, perseverance and courage throughout each story. In Beowulf, the main character Beowulf, demonstrates courage throughout the poem and Campbell’s Monomyth helps prove his heroic journey.

From the Bible to made-up stories; very old stories to Hollywood movies,our culture is rich with excellent stories of courage for the greater good. From David fighting Goliath in the Bible, the cowardly lion in The Wizard of Oz who gathers the courage to face the witch, to Harry Potter and stars war, kids are raised on a diet of heroic and motivational stories. History books tell colorful stories of social advocators, such as Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King , who chose to stand out against terribly unfair treatment at great personal risk.

Courage is an act of bravery one does that is frightening yet they still persevere.
