Inside Out And Back Again is based on Ha, a 10-year-old girl, her mother, and her 3 brothers. Ha, and her family are refugees from Vietnam, 1975. Due to war, Ha and her family left Saigon and ended up in Alabama. A refugee is a child or an adult who has chosen to flee their country due to war, famine, religion, etc. Vietnam, 1975, Ha had a lot of different traits. For one, she was jealous. She was jealous that on tet, only the brothers get to rise and touch the floor of the house first. ¨ … one of my brothers must rise first this morning to bless our house ….. For one, she didn't know English, so she did not understand what people were saying. Second, when they got her new house, the furniture and dishes were different and she didn't like it. Another reason is that at school, she got bullied for things like her arm hair being long and her face being flat, so her world was very inside out. When not understanding English, Ha would say things like, ¨ Whoever invented English should be bitten by a snake.( pg 128, Lai) This shows her difficulty with English and how frustrating it was to learn it. When Ha and her family lived in Saigon, they had very nice furniture and dishes, now she has different coloured furniture and mismatched dishes, and she doesn't like it very well. ¨ What I don't love: pink sofas, green chairs, plastic cover on a table, stained mattress, old clothes, unmatched dishes. ¨ (Pg 126, Lai) Ha has strong feelings about her new house, and not all are happy.
