Comparing John Proctor And Reverend Hale In The Crucible By Arthur Miller

The meaning of a Crucible is "a situation of severe trial, or in which different elements interact, leading to the creation of something new." This idea of a severe test and/or a "trial by fire" is seen throughout the play and its characters. I believe that it is mostly seen in John Proctor and Reverend Hale. John Proctor's crucible is how he must stand for something in the world where everyone is against him, and where few people stand with him. This forces proctor to speak up once he realizes he can no longer be silent, as remaining silent was only encouraging those who were in authority to continue to beguile the town. I imagined Reverend Hale and John Proctor to be older than they were presented in the movie though. They were presented by Hollywood as younger, better looking men which was not what I imagined them to be. The Village of Salem was presented as very gloomy and dark. In the play, the Village of Salem was never truly talked about. Us as readers, never heard about many townsfolk, and/or how they felt about the trials rather than simple comments here and there. Abigail Williams, although being one of the first people to begin creating accusations against her neighbors, she was not the only one. Tituba first named Sarah Good and Goody Osburne, but she only named them because of Thomas Putnam and Goody Putnam naming them first, and of course, out of fear of Reverend Parris whipping her. But, it is also the town's fault, because nobody found fault with naming Goody Osburne and Sarah Good, and nobody came to their defense either. In the beginning, the town believed that what the court was doing was good, because it was only affecting those who were thought to be low in the community, and those who never attended church. John Proctor is able to point out the fundamental problem with the witchcraft trials, and by saying "If she is innocent! Why do you never wonder if Parris be innocent, or Abigail? Is the accuser always holy now? Were they born this morning as clean as God's fingers? I'll tell you what's walking Salem—vengeance is walking Salem. We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kingdom,
