When the Portfolio Assignment was posted at the beginning of the semester, I knew I had to get started right away. I began to read some of the requirements of the assignment and found it difficult to complete this section. It took a long time for me to decide on who I should interview. I thought maybe I could interview one of my co-workers who are currently students as well but are farther along in their degree, but quickly decided not to since I was offered a new job as a bookkeeper. We would balance our bank accounts, work on accounts payable and receivable, handle all human resources issues, and financial reports. Kay Kerr was retiring from Source Receivables Management and had started out as the administrative assistant. As the organization grew, so did her position. She became the bookkeeper and when it grew more she became the accounting manager. I asked Kay how long she had been working in the accounting career outside of Source Receivables Management. She replied that she started her career in 1969 and in 1999 focused her accounting skills in the collection agency industry. The next question I asked was what her favorite part about her career. She answered, “Balancing!” She indicated how much joy it gave her to have an account balance to the penny. Kay shared that when she first started out in the accounting department in a property development company, she liked to pick the hardest accounts to balance because it was the most interesting to figure out.
