Discoveries and discovering can offer new understandings and renewed perceptions of ourselves and others. The film, “Life of Pi” directed by Ang Lee, and the novel, “The Alchemist” written by Paulo Coelho both explore and express the concept of discoveries offering an individual a new understanding of Scene 12 in the ‘Life of Pi’ depicts Pi weeping on his raft after being violently confronted by Richard Parker. If the audience believes that tiger represents Pi’s primitive and wild side, then this can be seen as Pi coming to terms with his true self. He is realising just what he has done and become. Isolation is a challenge that many people experience sometime in their life. It is how the individual reacts to this challenge that shapes their future. A parallel can be drawn between the desert in ‘The Alchemist’ and the sea in ‘Life of Pi’. There is a likeness to the abandonment one can feel when they’re surrounded by the enormity of the seemingly endless oceans of sand and sea. The seclusion evident in both environments contribute to sense of isolation felt by both characters, Santiago and Pi, in their respective texts. Strong visual imagery has been used in ‘The Alchemist’ to express the enormity of the vast desert. “The desert is so huge, and the horizons so distant”, the imagery inspires an overwhelming sense of space, it limits the imagination of the beholder, allowing them only to visualise an immense, lifeless wasteland. This is further developed by the emphasis placed on the repeating ‘so’.
